Setting Up Your eMail Program

You may set your eMail accounts up in your favorite version of Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora or other third party eMail program. Instructions for setting up basic accounts in Outlook may be viewed in our tutorials. Other eMail program set up instructions are located below.

Eudora — Thunderbird — MS Outlook

The links below are for a few of the most popular eMail programs and will direct you to their web site help areas where you will find assistance in setting up your eMail. Your version may not exactly match the links, but you should still be able to utilize the basic concepts provided. We do not provide technical support for any third party programs. Please consult the individual eMail program help and support features available through the programs themselves and their web sites for further assistance.

Incoming & Outgoing Mail Servers

Incoming and outgoing mail server configuration is also know as "pop" (incoming mail) and "smtp" (outgoing mail). You must specify the incoming and outgoing mail servers within your preferred eMail program. On our servers, they are both the same: mail.yourdomain.com (replace "yourdomain" with your site domain name). You may be familiar with something more like the incoming mail configuration as "pop.yourdomain.com" and the outgoing being "smtp.yourdomain.com" however, in this instance you should use "mail.yourdomain.com" for both settings.

If your site uses another extension other than the .com extension, you will need to use your own domain extension instead of .com. Example: "mail.yourdomain.org" in both the pop and smtp windows.

SMTP Exception to the Configuration

Most ISP's do not allow use of another smtp configuration and require that you use their configuration instead or you will not be able to send mail. If you have problems with outgoing mail using the original mail.yourdomain.com configuration, please first try changing your outgoing smtp to your ISP's smtp server requirements. You may need to check or un-check "need authorization" in order to use the mail.yourdomain.com. If using your local ISP smtp, you should not need to set it to authorization.

If You Cannot Receive Mail

If you find you cannot retrieve eMail in a third party eMail program by using mail.yourdomain.com in the pop field try changing this to the IP address of your account. In other words you would input your IP address as given in your informational letter. It would be one of these: 64.119.177.220 or 64.119.177.221.

If your account was on the previous server than we are using now (as of June 30, 2004) and you used a username in your third party eMail program that is not a complete eMail address an actual eMail address (or the first part of your eMail address before the "@") you will also need to change your username. For some the part of the eMail address as a stand alone works, for others you must use the full eMail address. So, it's either your eMail name which is the part before the "@" only or eMailname@domain.com for your username.

If you are experiencing difficulty receiving mail, please try both options above before requesting assistance.

Setting Up eMail Inboxes

If you wish to set up individual inboxes for your various eMail accounts in your own mail reader program, please consult your eMail program's help files or the tech support links found on their sites. We do not provide technical support or help for any third party eMail program. In addition, you might check with someone you know who's familiar with how this is done and request their assistance.

"Individual inboxes" means setting up an account for each eMail address you use, such as "help@yourdomain.com"or "sales@yourdomain.com" which enables you to receive your "help" mail in the "help" inbox and the "support" eMails in the sales inbox. Many people prefer this method, particularly on large volume eMail accounts vs all eMail coming into one central eMail location and having to sort through them manually.

Leaving Mail on the Server

One issue that continues to recur is that when utilizing a real eMail program, many clients are not configuring their "Leave Mail on Server" setting correctly. Setting this correctly in your eMail program is a necessity. Let me explain ...

In order to provide these low cost plans, we must require that you keep an eye on your eMail account. This is a necessity whether you use a real eMail program or web mail. Following these simple steps will help keep your costs down!

What's Web Mail?

If you have an @yahoo.com or @hotmail.com type eMail address you are accessing your eMail via your web browser. Free eMail accounts such as those mentioned, are web mail based but "prettied up" for each site's needs. They offer additional features like news, horoscopes, weather and the like. Free eMail accounts are browser based so you are going to a web site to access your mail vs installing a real eMail program on your computer.

Essentially, this is the same way your site web mail works. Your site web mail does not have all the extras like Yahoo, GMail, Hotmail and the like. Although our new control panel upgrade now provides some simple news links, your site web mail is a "scaled down to basics" version of what you see on the free eMail sites and dedicated strictly to dealing with eMail.

Accessing Mail via Web Mail

There are surprisingly many more people than I ever imagined that do not utilize what I call a a real eMail program such as Eudora, Thunderbird or a version of Outlook. I personally don't care for web mail and only use it when absolutely necessary.

Web mail has the advantage in that you can access it from any browser wherever you may be. This is a great asset for travelers and business people who need eMail availablity outside of their homes and offices. I just find it to be clunky, awkward, slow and lacking significantly in the advanced features of a real eMail program. As much as I don't like web mail, I also find it to be a great convenience. When I'm not at home or in my office, as long as I have access to a web browser I can handle my mail from anywhere!

For those of you who do utilize web mail, whether it be your preferred choice or as an alternative — you of course need to know how to access your web mail account!

How Do I Get To My Web Mail?

The link configuration below will take you to the login page of your web mail. This link is identical for every single site on our server. Replace the "yoursitename" portion of the url with your own site's domain name. Replacing "yoursitename" with your own is what gets you to your web mail and not someone elses.

https://webmail.yoursitename.com

Note that the url uses https instead of http.

The url directs you to your login page where you'll be presented with a login screen. The login is identical to the login you use if you normally use a real eMail program.

Enter your username in the username field. Your username is the eMail address of the eMail account you wish to check. If you have several eMail addresses on your web site, you will need to check each eMail address individually unless you have forwarded additional eMail names to say a main eMail address. Yes, you can set up mail redirects via your control panel.

If you have additional eMail addresses that are not using your site name (@yoursitename.com) your site web mail will not retrieve eMail from other accounts such as @yahoo.com or @gmail.com. Yahoo, GMail, Hotmail and other eMail accounts are completely independent from your site eMail and you must access those accounts as you normally do unless you have those individual accounts forward mail to your site mail. This is just one more reason I prefer a real eMail program. I can forward other account eMail to my site eMail account thus allowing me to receive and send eMail from one place. It's extremely helpful for me to be able to keep all my mail in one place. Using a real eMail program makes managing my eMail much more efficient.

Enter your password in the password field. Your password was provided in your welcome letter. Click the login button. That's it! You have web mail access to your site name eMail!

What Do I Do Once I'm There?

Once there, although having limited features as compared to a real eMail program — you may customize the interface to suit you by accessing the Options link.

You will not need to configure pop or smtp settings as you would in a real eMail reader program. These settings will be automatically created for you upon creation of your hosting account.
